"Texas Native No. 1" by Penelope Speier
artist: PENELOPE SPEIER
TEXAS NATIVE NO. 1
12" x 12" x 1-1/2" Oil on canvas with glass beads, unframed (2020)
Part of the online exhibition, "April Dressed in All Its Trim" with guest curator, Paula Owen
Light has always been an important concept in my work. I continue my exploration of light and reflection in my choice of the glass beads used on the surface of the ongoing series of oil paintings on canvas that I have created since 2000.
The tiny and perfectly round clear glass beads reflect the light shown on them encouraging the viewer to see different perspectives.
As an artist I have been influenced by the Japanese concept of Wabi Sabi which celebrates the beauty of the rustic and unpolished as well as the spare aesthetic of Zen.
My work is a meditative practice based on my observations and reflections on nature.
